Bankya is world-wide known health resort. It is situated in the beautiful valley on the slopes of the Lyulin mountain, 17 km far from Sofia.
Bankya balneotreatment resort, near Sofia is a resort of international importance. During the archeological excavations in the region many years ago remains of churches, ceramics and coins dating from the Roman times have been found.

Devin is a renowned spa and holiday resort. It is situated amid scenic hills in the heart of the Rhodopes at an altitude of 710 - 780 m. In early antiquity the place was inhabited by the Thracian tribe of the Bessi, and later by the Romans.
Devin has several mineral water springs with a temperature between 37 and 44C. The water is clear, colourless, palatable, odourless, hyper- and homeo-thermal, mildly mineralized, and contains hydrocarbonates of sodium and small quantities of fluorine. It has a strong alkaline reaction (pH 9.4). The total usable flow is 1,800 l/min. The curative properties of Devin's mineral waters are due to their considerable mineralization, the relatively high content of metasilicic acid and fluorine, mild acidity and high temperature.
The climate of the spa is transitionally continental, considerably tempered by the southern influence. The average annual temperature is 10.5C. The winter is mild; the summer, warm and fresh thanks to the local mountain breezes. The autumn is warm and long. The average January temperature is -1.5C. The average annual duration of sunshine is about 1,100 hours. Devin has a new modern hydrotherapy clinic with a resort polyclinic and a pool; juniper, carbonic acid and oxygen baths; facilities for hydrotherapy, modern light and electrotherapy, diagnosis, remedial gymnastics and massage rooms.
Devin is suitable for the spa and climatic treatment of a wide range of diseases: of the locomotor system, cardiovascular diseases and nervous disorders. The internationally famous year-round resort Pamporovo is situated 35 km away from Devin.
Golden sands spa
The resort Golden Sands lies 17 km north of the city of Varna. The 35 km long and up to 100 m wide beach strip, covered with fine golden sand, is perfect for sun and air baths and sand cures. The large nearby forests afford pleasant coolness and improve the air's oxygen content.
The climate is a typical sea climate with elements of continental influence. Summers are pleasantly warm, average July temperatures not exceeding 22°C. Winter is mild with an average January temperature of 1.4°C, The resort's mineral waters are naturally thermal and slightly mineralized: hydrocarbonic-sodium-calcium-magnesium and hydrocarbonic-sodium in composition. The health resort of Hissar is situated in the centre of Bulgaria, in the southern folds of Sredna Gora Mountain, 42 km north of Plovdiv (the second biggest town in the country) and 160 km east of Sofia (the capital of Bulgaria)
Curative mineral water. There are 22 mineral springs with a total debit of 4000 lmin. and a temperature of 37-52 C. The mineral water is light, clear, colourless, flavourless and tasty. It is slightly mineralized, hypo- and hyper-thermal, with a predominance of hydrocarbonic, sodium, sulphate and fluorine ions, as well as substantial amounts of radio radioactive gas. The radioactive emanation is 10-165 Em, pH - 7,6 - 9,02 and over 20 microelements. Acid content - 200 - 270 mgl. The Augusta hotel is the only hotel with a full medical program in Bulgaria.
Climate: The climate is moderate continental with mild and warm winter. The average annual snowcover is 12 days. Spring comes early, summer is temperately hot with an average month temperature of 22 C. Autumn is warm and longlasting. Cloud coverage is low. The average annual humidity is moderate (70 %). Foggy weather is an exeption. The wettest months are June and November.
The maximum air humidity is 65-70 %.
Sunny days - 280 per year.
The town is ecologically clear. There are no industrial plants or factories in the region. It is rich in parks and green areas.
The Karlovo baths
The Karlovo Baths spa complex is situated a few kilometers away from the town of Karlovo. There is regular bus transport from Karlovo to the complex, which consists of a polyclinic, a sanatorium, recreation facilities, an open-air pool and a lot of villas. The mineral water here (35-540 C) is used for treatment of gynecological diseases, disorders of the bone, muscular and peripheral nervous systems, etc.
Built on the site of the ancient town of Pautalia, is one of the most famous Bulgarian resorts. It lies at the foot of Ossogovo Mountain at an altitude of 510-530 m. Thanks to the lush vegetation of the surrounding landscape and the beautiful gardens of its neat lovely houses, the town is refreshingly green and inviting.
The climate is traditionally continental with Mediterranean influence. The mild weather is largely due to the beneficial effect of the mountains which surround the plain from the north, east and west. The average annual temperature is 11C; and the average July temperature, 21.6C. The annual duration of sunshine is 2,200 hours on the average , and the relative air humidity, 68 per cent.
The mineral waters of the numerous fountains (natural springs and wells) have an almost uniform chemical composition, temperature and sulphide content (71-73C; 9.4-11.3 mg oxidable sulphur compounds estimated in terms of hydrogen sulphide). The waters are clear , colourless, with a pleasant taste and a slight smell of hydrogen sulphide. They are mildly mineralized, hyperthermal and contain sulphides, silicon (83 to 104 mg of metasilicic acid), fluorine (7.6-8.9 mg per litre) and sulphates of sodium with a strong alkaline reaction (pH 9.13-9.80). The total flow is about 2,400 l/min. Their curative and preventive properties are mainly due to the sulphides , the high metasilicic acid content, the high temperature, the hypotonic effect, the mild mineralization and the relatively high fluorine content.
The curative properties of Kyustendil's mineral waters have been known since ancient times. Another important curative agent, used for the systematic treatment of a wide range of diseases, is the peat mined near the village of Baikal which is reach in humic acids and organic substances. It is used in peat baths, for general and partial applications, vaginal and rectal electrophoresis, etc. The favourite climate, the curative peat from Baikal, the mineral waters and the possibilities of specific fruit-diet therapy attract many Bulgarian and foreign visitors to Kyustendil.

Its fame Momin Prohod owes to the achievements of the local specialists in the healing of diseases of the respiratory, the cardiovascular, the nervous and the digestive systems, of metabolic and different kinds of allergic conditions.

St. Konstantine and Elena
One of the best Black Sea resorts in Bulgaria. The resort is some 10 km away from Varna - the sea capital, and is a wonderful combination of sea, age-old forests and mineral water.
The first Bulgarian seaside resort St.Constantine has an ancient history, exotic character and modernity all in the midst of natural park with a broken coastline, small bays and scatteres cliffs - a paradise for anglers and drivers. The resort is named after the local monastery that was buil no one knowns when. The Kalogersko Shoushoukane wine is said to have been made there. A small church halfway under the ground with regular services is the only surviving structure. This was favorite recreational place for the people of Varna long before the Liberation; the richer ones had rooms reserved for them in the monastery; others built summer houses amidst the woods. The first holiday house that was visited by Czech, Poles and Germans was built in 1908.

Internationally known climate therapy and health resort. It is situated in the valley of the Sandanska Bistritsa river, at the foot of the south-western stopes of Pirin.
Without exaggeration the climate of Sandanski can be described as unique. Throughout the year, air temperatures are higher than anywhere else in the country. The average annual temperature (14.7C) is the highest in Bulgaria. The winter is mild and short, and the autumn - long and warm. The relative air humidity is low (66 per cent), and the annual duration of sunshine is no less than 2,436 hours. Sandanski has the lowest annual rainfall in Bulgaria (127 litres per square metre) and almost no foggy days. The air is remarkably clean and pollution free.
Apart from its natural beauty, lush vegetation and remarkably wholesome climate, the resort also features a multitude of mineral springs. The wells and natural springs situated in two thermal zones have a total flow of 1,500 l/min. The mineral waters have a nearly uniform chemical composition but contain varying quantities of metasilicic acid and fluorine. The waters are clear , colourless, odourless with a pleasant taste: silicic (containing 71 to 135 mg of metasilicic acid per litre), slightly fluoric (3.2 to 6.5 mg of fluorine per litre), hyperthermal (42 to 81C), slightly mineralized, containing sodium hydrocarbonates and sulphates, with a pH value ranging from neutral to mildly alkaline (pH 7.2 to 8).

The town is situated on the Northern slope of Rila Mountain in Southwestern Bulgaria, just a two hours drive from the Capital of Sofia. The municipality contains the popular tourist destinations of the Seven Rila Lakes and the Skakavitza Reserve and Waterfall. As well as the administrative center of Sapareva Banya, 15 kilometers East of Doupnitza, the municipality includes the villages of Saparevo, Resilovo, Ovchartzi and the mountain resort of Panichishte. The municipality proudly shares one third of its territory with Rila National Park, which was established in 1992.
Sapareva Banya prides itself in its cool mountain water and its healing geothermal mineral waters. The mineral water is largely sulfuric with significant levels of iron, calcium and manganese. It is the hottest mineral water in the Balkans and produces the only active geyser here as well. The geyser and its surrounding park were developed in 1957 and have been tapped as a geothermal heating source for the municipal buildings and the greenhouses.
The village of Shipkovo is situated on the northern slopes of Central Stara planina mountain, in the folds of the pre-Balkan, on the eastern slopes of the Vassiliovska planina mountain, just 20 km west of the town of Troyan and approximately 47 km southeast of the town of Teteven. The village is located in the valley of the Rajdavets River – a left tributary of the Beli Osam river, within the boundaries of National Park “Central Balkan”.
The village of Shipkovo received its name from the first settlers because as the legends claim it was completely surrounded by dog roses. Today’s village of Shipkovo exists since 1630. Its population is 1100 people. It is located at 680 m above sea level and the “Shipkovski mineral baths” resort is at 700 m above sea level and spreads over an area of 45000 decares. The village of Shipkovo enjoys a moderate continental climate – cool summer and mild winter. The average annual temperature for the region is 10 C.
The freshness and ecologically clean nature, the unique combination of century-old beech-tree woods and different kinds of coniferous trees, the crystal-clear mountain brooks, the marvelous and mystical rocky formations and caves and healing mineral springs transform the village of Shipkovo into a majestic and unique, exceptionally preferred and often visited place.
There are many rare tree species here, which may be of some interest to the guests in the village and the resort. In the region of the resort there are many natural landmarks, tourist attractions, routes and eco-trails. On the fascinating mountain ridges one can find wild blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and a variety of mushrooms and healing fragrant herbs. The hunter-tourists from Bulgaria and abroad are welcome here. In the land belonging to the village they will find foes, wild boars, deer, bears, wolves and other predators. Rare species of birds of pray also roam in the skies above the village.
The resort village has good transport connections. There are regular bus lines from the town of Troyan to the village of Shipkovo.
The Mineral Springs
Except as a well-formed mountain village Shipkovo is also known for its healing mineral springs. There are two mineral springs and five drillings in the resort. The mineral water is from the sulfate-calcium-magnesium group, with a varying temperature of 18 to 38 C. The healing process consists both in drinking of mineral water and balneology procedures. The mineral water is used for the treatment of several groups of diseases and disorders:

The treatment procedures are performed in a balneology center with capacity 1000 per day. The center disposes of an open-air mineral water swimming pool.
Varshetz is situated in the northern foothills of the western part of the Balkan Range. One of the oldest and most popular resorts in Northern Bulgaria, it is famous for its curative mineral springs, mild mountain climate, beautiful scenery and a large well-kept park. The resort lies at an altitude of 304 m. The transitionally climate is largely due to the vicinity of the mountain. The average annual temperature is above 10 C. The average January temperature is -2C; and the average July temperature, 21.4C. The autumn is warm and long. Spring sets in about the middle of March. The winter is cold, and the summer pleasantly warm. The annual duration of sunshine is about 2,000 hours. The snow cover lasts 60 days.
The mineral water of the natural springs and wells is clear, colourless, odourless and palatable. It is isothermal (32-38), alkaline, mildly mineralized and contains hydrocarbonates and sulphates of sodium with a total flow of 1,200 l/min. The hypotonic properties of the water, the low fluorine content, its softness and almost uniform temperature determine its curative properties.
The mineral water of Varshez contains number of trace elements such as iron, lithium, barium, aluminium, strontium, phosphates, manganese, arsenic, etc. It is suitable for external use, as well as for inhalations, irrigations and drinking. It applies for treatment of functional diseases of the central nervous system, cardiovascular diseases; various diseases of the cardiac muscle and valves; chronic cardiac insufficiency; post-infraction conditions; endocrine and metabolic diseases. Good results have also been achieved in the treatment of some diseases of the peripheral nervous system, the locomotor system and some gastrointestinal diseases.
Velingrad is the most beautiful and most famous among the Bulgarian Balneological resorts. It lies at the western end of Chepino Valley, one of the most attractive part of the Rhodopean Mountains in Southern Bulgaria. There are 70 sources of mineral water with curative and preventive properties.
The mineral waters (from springs and wells) vary considerably in temperature, mineralization, radon, silicic acid and fluorine content, and are suitable for treatment of a wide range of diseases. 9000 litres of water per minute spring from the five thermal and mineral deposits in Ladjene, Kamenitza, Chepino, Rakitovo and Kostadinovo. Velingrad is situated at 750-850 m above sea level. Summer is warm, winter is mild. The average annual temperature is 10C; and the average July temperature is 19C. The annual duration of sunshine is about 2,000 hours. The relative air humidity ranges from 65 to 75 per cent.Surrounded by age-old pine tree woods, the town favors abundant sunshine. This exclusively rare and valuable combination has a beneficial influence on the process of ionization (negative ions are prevailing) and are of definite therapeutic importance.
In the resort successfully are treated pulmonary cases: pulmonary emphysema, chronic bronchitis, post bronchial pneumonia, etc. The treatment of non-specific diseases of the respiratory tract is particularly successful. Considerable experience has been accumulated in the efficient treatment of diseases of the locomotive system, nervous diseases and gynecological disorders.
Together with the numerous mineral waters Velingrad takes pride in another natural phenomenon as well - the Kleptuza. This is the biggest Karst spring in Bulgaria with debit of 1200 litres of ice-cold water per second.
The balneological centre Voneshta voda is located at the foot of the Balkans, 30 km from the picturesque city Veliko Tarnovo, 580 m above sea level.

A 16km bus ride to the northwest of Velingrad, Yundola is a small health resort 1390m above sea level, set amid rounded hills and copses of trees. It used to be a popular rest-home for trade unionists and Young Pioneers, but is chiefly remarkable for its inhabitants' longevity. The prevalence of centenarians in Bulgaria is ascribed to features of life in the highlands.
Human longevity is supposedly extended by pure air, climatic extremes, a lack of stress, and a spartan diet with little meat and plenty of yoghurt.
